Shortly after delivering a memorable commentary during the Wolves v Coventry FA Cup quarter-final clash, commentator Clive Tyldesley seemed to suggest retirement, sparking dismay among football fans.
Tyldesley’s commentary at Molineux, where Coventry clinched victory in a thrilling five-goal encounter, earned him praise for his coverage of the dramatic turnaround, along with an apparent jest at Kate Middleton‘s expense.
Following the match, Tyldesley shared images from the commentary box alongside Ally McCoist, captioning them with, ‘Maybe the last FA Cup tie I’ll ever call. Thank you for the big finish!!’
The hint at retirement didn’t sit well with many football enthusiasts who read the post.
While some urged him to continue, others took the opportunity to commend the 69-year-old.

‘ITV’s biggest mistake not keeping you as lead commentator. Even bigger mistake that BT/TNT didn’t continue to have you as the voice of UCL. CBS’s gain.’ one user posted.
‘Ahhh, what a way to go out. You were class today as always. I hope it isn’t the last one!’ a second shared.
Another added: ‘I really hope it’s not your last Clive. Loved your comms today and the chemistry with Ally is the best in the business’
‘Really loved the commentary. Perfect accompaniment to the finale. Wish you and Ally were the first choice team on ITV.’ a fourth wrote.
Despite Tyldesley’s role in the Molineux game, Sam Matterface took the helm for Sunday’s showdown between Manchester United and Liverpool.
The FA Cup clash was full of drama, with a rapid-fire double from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno seeming to flip the game, but Coventry rallied and completed a remarkable comeback.
First, Simms levelled the score with a header, redeeming himself for a glaring miss earlier in the match. Then, in the 10th minute of added time, American striker Haji Wright sealed the victory with a curling effort, sending Coventry into the semi-finals at Wembley.
Coventry’s last trip to Wembley saw them defeated to Luton Town in the play-off finals for Rob Edwards’ Hatters into the Premier League.
Matterface has served as ITV’s lead commentator since 2020 and is expected to continue in that capacity for future rounds. Although the Saturday game started quietly, it soon erupted with drama.
VAR checked Ellis Simms’ first goal for handball in Coventry’s FA Cup clash against Wolves
Tyldesley sparked concern amongst his fans after posting a cryptic tweet on
Ellis Simms initially broke the deadlock for Coventry after a VAR review for handball, during which Tyldesley made a ‘photoshopped hand’ remark.
It comes after Princess of Wales Kate Middleton apologised for editing a Mother’s Day picture as she continues to recover from abdominal surgery. The princess issued a statement after the Palace came under mounting pressure to reveal the truth behind the photo of Kate and her three children.
The world’s top picture and news agencies – including PA – ‘killed’ the image over claims it had been digitally manipulated.
