The Nerazzurri went into the tournament under the guidance of new coach Cristian Chivu and he had a rough start, inheriting a side that was fresh from a 5-0 Champions League Final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
They were held to a 1-1 draw by Mexicans Monterrey in the opening game, then completed a comeback to defeat Japanese club Urawa Reds 2-1 with Valentin Carboni’s stoppage-time winner.
That put them on four points, the same as River Plate, who beat Urawa Reds 3-1 and then drew 0-0 with Monterrey.

Lautaro Martinez is expected to be partnered by Francesco Pio Esposito, rather than brother Sebastiano, leaving Marcus Thuram on the bench.
Denzel Dumfries and Henrikh Mkhitaryan should return to the starting XI following fitness concerns.
River Plate are forced into some changes, because Kevin Castano was sent off in the most recent match and is therefore suspended along with Giuliano Galoppo and Enzo Perez.
Agustin Ruberto and Sebastian Driussi are carrying injuries, but familiar faces include ex-Fiorentina defenders Lucas Martinez Quarta and German Pezzella.
Teenage sensation Franco Mastantuono will join Real Madrid after the Club World Cup for €45m.
Kick-off is due at 02.00 BST (03.00 CET, 18.00 local time) at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The best way to live stream the Club World Cup is with DAZN, which is offering a free service this summer, which can also be upgraded to a premium service. DAZN’s free offer means ads during games, and no replays or extended highlights, but it’s still a pretty tempting deal that will surely get fans and others signing up quickly.
