Cole Palmer celebrated Chelsea‘s UEFA Conference League victory over FC Copenhagen by pretending to drink a beer.

Enzo Maresca‘s side took on the Danish giants in the first leg of their last-16 tie in the European competition, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Reece James and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea are overwhelming favourites for the Conference League and should progress to the quarter-final stage, although Gabriel Pereira’s late consolation did at least keep the tie alive ahead of next week’s second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer made his first start in the competition on Thursday, with the attacking midfielder having been left out of the Blues’ squad for the League Stage after featuring in both legs of their qualifying tie against Servette in August.

He put in a solid display in Denmark, but was unable to end his poor run of form that has seen the 22-year-old now go eight games in all competitions without a goal or assist.

However, Palmer went viral after Fernandez put Chelsea 2-0 up midway through the second half.

As Fernandez was joined by his team-mates – including Palmer – when he wheeled away to celebrate, a pint of beer was thrown onto the pitch.

Palmer ironically picked up the plastic cup and turned to team-mate Trevoh Chalobah before he toasted the beer in jest.

And Palmer’s antics left fans in hysterics as they took to social media to hail the 22-year-old.

‘Raise that beer high! You all deserve it! Congrats,’ one said. Another added: ‘This is class I can’t lie.’

A further fan quipped: ‘Cole Palmer says, “Hold my Beer”.’

Palmer’s dip in form comes after he has enjoyed a stunning 18 months since signing for the Blues from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 for £42.5million.

The attacking midfielder has scored 39 goals and added 21 assists, regularly leading from the front at Stamford Bridge.

Despite his recent struggles, Palmer is still in the midst of a fantastic season having added 20 goal contributions in 27 Premier League matches, but things are not quite working out as planned right now.

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was happy with his side’s display in Denmark but was left frustrated by their late concession.

‘Because it has been a little bit of a sloppy goal,’ the Italian said. ‘We can avoid that. It’s football, it can happen.

‘Now 90 minutes have finished and now we have 90 more minutes against them.

‘The main game for us is Sunday’s game, at home and we need our fans for 100 minutes behind the team and pushing the team.

‘If we can win against Leicester on Sunday, we can do one more step to finishing in the Champions League… top four or top five, I do not know.’
