Chelsea superstar Cole Palmer is locked in an unexpected legal battle with a French winery as he attempts to trademark his “Cold Palmer” nickname.

The England international, 23, has established himself as one of the best players in world football since leaving Manchester City for Chelsea, and his celebration has become one of the most recognisable in sport.

Palmer, who copied the celebration from former Man City academy team-mate Morgan Rogers, rubs his hands on his arms to mimic shivering whenever he scores and Noni Madueke jokingly called him “Cold Palmer” following a mesmeric solo goal versus Luton Town back in December 2023.

The nickname has stuck and Palmer is now attempting to trademark it as he looks to sell a number of products.

However, his application to trademark the term “Cold Palmer” has been opposed by a French winery called Chateau Palmer, who believe their image would be damaged if the Chelsea star is successful with his bid.

Palmer hopes to trademark his nickname in order to sell clothes, food, toys, toiletries, razor blades, diet drinks and, most importantly in this context, alcohol.

The England superstar wants to market wine and this section of his application quickly alerted Chateau Palmer, as per The Sun, who have opposed his trademark bid as they believe their reputation would be threatened.

Both sides will reportedly argue their case to lawyers at the government’s Intellectual Property Office (GIPO), who will issue a final ruling on the legal battle.

Chateau Palmer is a renowned winery in the south-west of France and it recently sold a bottle for a whopping £750. It was initially named Chateau de Gascq, before being purchased by British army officer Charles Palmer in 1814.

It is unknown whether Chelsea star Palmer is a keen wine drinker.
