Coventry City owner Doug King has confirmed that Frank Lampard is one of the names under consideration to succeed Mark Robins.

The Chelsea legend has been out of a job for over a year. Lampard stepped in as caretaker towards the end of the 2022/2023 season to help the crisis-stricken Blues see out the season.

Lampard actually fared worse in his second stint at the club than in his unimpressive first, winning just one of his 11 games in charge. He previously was permanent manager at Stamford Bridge, taking on the role in 2019 after an encouraging year at Derby County.

However, the 46-year-old lasted just a year and a half at Chelsea and was sacked in 2021. After a year away from the game, Lampard returned to the Premier League as Everton boss, but this experiment was aborted after just 12 months.

The former England midfielder was recently linked with the now-vacant AS Roma job, but those reports have already been dismissed. Instead, Lampard’s future could lie in the Championship.

Coventry chief confirms Lampard interest

Earlier this month, Coventry City made the shocking decision to sack Mark Robins, who had led the club from League Two to the Championship promotion final and FA Cup semi-final.

Lampard quickly emerged as a target for the Sky Blues and owner Doug King has now confirmed that the Chelsea legend is one of the names in the frame for the job.

“We’ve received a huge amount of CVs from high-quality people, of which Frank is one,” he told Sky Sports. “We’ve done nothing on that process…but clearly we’re in the international break, we’ll be assessing everything. We’ll work out who’s going to make the shortlist and we’ll go from there.”

Earlier, on Monday, King said at a fan forum: “I don’t want to make a mistake. I have seen how well [interim boss] Rhys [Carr] handled Saturday. We would hope to get someone in place within ten days but don’t have a meltdown if not because we want to get it right.

“If we select the right candidate we should be all right. I don’t want a revolving door either because it’s as expensive as hell as well, by the way. I believe we have a top-six squad. We have the ability to get out of this league.”
