With just over an hour to go until kick-off, Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Niko Kovač has announced his starting eleven to take on Barcelona. The team from Catalunya practically have one foot in the semi-finals thanks to a dominant 4-0 first-leg win last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Die Schwarzgelben have left themselves with a mountain to climb if they are to reach out the final four of Europe’s premier competition for a second consecutive season. Last Saturday’s draw away to Bayern Munich might give Kovač and his players a glimmer of confidence ahead of tonight, but a hefty portion of luck would also be required to overturn the deficit one would imagine.
Tonight, Dortmund make four alterations to their line-up which ground out that aforementioned 2-2 stalemate against the Bundesliga leaders on Saturday evening. Gregor Kobel remains in goals and takes the captain armband as Emre Can (muscular problems) is replaced by Rami Bensebaini who joins Waldemar Anton and Niklas Süle in the three-man backline.
With Marcel Sabitzer sidelined through injury, the midfield is comprised of Pascal Groß and Felix Nmecha who replaces Salih Özcan this evening alongside wing-backs Daniel Svensson and Yan Couto. The Brazilian takes over from Julian Ryerson who drops to the bench, while the front three includes the final change as Karim Adeyemi comes into Julian Brandt’s vacant spot to partner Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier.
As for the hosts, head coach Hansi Flick lines up in his preferred 4-3-3 formation with centre-half Ronaldo Araujo as captain on the night. Former BVB striker Robert Lewandowski starts up top for the Spanish giants again, while Gerard Martin replaces the injured Baldé at left-back. Meanwhile, Gavi is given a start in midfield over Pedri.
Official lineups below:
Barcelona (4-3-3): Szczesny – Koundé, Cubarsi, Araujo (c), Martin – Gavi, De Jong, Fermin – Yamal, Lewandowski, Raphinha
Borussia Dortmund (3-4-3): Kobel (c) – Süle Anton, Bensebaini – Couto, Nmecha, Groß, Svensson – Beier, Guirassy, Adeyemi
