Real Madrid’s new head coach will be Xabi Alonso, with the Bayer Leverkusen boss having agreed a three-year deal to sign with the Bernabeu outfit.

Alonso confirmed that he will leave B04 last week before his side suffered a 4-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund in their final home match under the Spaniard’s stewardship.

He has been regarded as the frontrunner to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid for over a year, and now he is ready to commit himself to the giants for three years.

Josep Pedrerol confirmed that deal via El Chiringuito, revealing that Alonso will be in charge in time to take Los Blancos to the FIFA Club World Cup and also that the new boss has three new signings lined up.

“Alonso will be Real Madrid’s coach from 1 June,” the journalist said. “He’s signed for three seasons. There were doubts about the Club World Cup but he will travel for it.

“He will be one of the new faces, not the only one. Because the three new signings of Real Madrid will also travel.

“You already know that Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of those. We have to have respect for his current club, because all the players finish the contract on 30 June and the Club World Cup starts on 13 June. So we have to clean up those details, but Madrid believe that Alexander-Arnold will travel with the team to the Club World Cup.

“And two signings… I can’t reveal their names yet. One is a left-back and the other is a centre-back. A left-back, a centre-back plus Alexander-Arnold.”

Real Madrid are in need of a lift after suffering a 4-3 defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday, allowing a two-goal advantage to escape them, despite Kylian Mbappe scoring a remarkable hat-trick.
