The Magpies struggled through a tough summer transfer window as they were unable to bring in Crystal Palace man Marc Guehi, with several offers knocked back by the south London club.

Newcastle left it late and even a Deadline Day offer for Anthony Elanga was not enough to bring in a new first-team member to the club, with Nottingham Forest also rejecting their bid.

It’s thought that Trippier again has now told Eddie Howe he wants to leave Newcastle as he wrestles personal problems away from the pitch.

Eddie Howe has chosen to appoint Bruno Guimaraes as the new team captain, moving Trippier off the leadership branch.

Howe is keen to retain Trippier, but the 33-year-old right-back is unwilling to accept a diminished role on the bench after also losing his starting position to Tino Livramento who arrived from Southampton last year.

The transfer window remains open for clubs in the Super Lig. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have already initiated discussions with Trippier but we are told it’s Besiktas that are the most advanced.

Howe said ahead of the game against Tottenham: “The situation is business as usual, Tripps has trained really well this week. I’m surprised by a lot of the stories that have come out,” Howe said in a news conference on Friday.

“[He’s] a valuable member of the squad. His professionalism has been first class.”

Howe added: “His leadership skills, his ability with the ball, his assist record, everything he brings to the group we definitely want here.”
