Aleksandar Pavlovic missed his fourth consecutive match for Bayern Munich on Tuesday as the Bavarians beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the Champions League.

Speaking after the game, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl revealed the exact diagnosis of the central midfielder’s problem: He is suffering from glandular fever, also known as infectious mononucleosis.

It’s unclear at this stage when Pavlovic will be able to return to action, but the illness could lead to a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Ligainsider suggests that in the worst case scenario, he could miss the rest of the season, but it depends on many factors.

The report claims that in mild cases, sports doctors recommend a break of around a month, but if the exhaustion persists, the illness is considered to be of moderate severity and an absence of around two months is expected. Severe cases could mean an even longer break.

Marin Pongracic, for example, spent several months on the sidelines with mononucleosis when he played for Wolfsburg back in 2020.
