Could this be why Jurgen Klopp quit? Liverpool unveil plans for the one thing the German DIDN’T want at Anfield… less than a week after outgoing boss announced shock departure

Jurgen Klopp‘s final months as manager of Liverpool will be captured in a TV documentary after the club confirmed filming had begun on a new fly-on-the-wall series.

There had been speculation that Liverpool would be the subject of the latest documentary on a football club and the Anfield side announced on Wednesday that it was in the works.

The documentary is set to be produced, filmed, and directed by Lorton Entertainment, who previously worked on football documentaries ‘Diego Maradona‘ and Steven Gerrard‘s film ‘Make Us Dream’, as well as Disney+ series ‘Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story’. 

It is thought it will be released after the end of the season.

Liverpool remain in competition for four trophies this season and the documentary will hope to cover their successes in England and abroad

Liverpool was previously the focus of a documentary under former manager Brendan Rodgers in 2012, titled ‘Being: Liverpool’. It was met with mixed reviews.

But the club are no doubt keen to cash in on the new wave of interest in fly-on-the-wall documentaries prompted by the standout success of Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ series, ‘Sunderland Till I Die’, and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. 

The documentary could also capture the Reds winning four trophies as they battle on European and domestic fronts. 

In 2018, Klopp is understood to have been chiefly responsible for turning down an approach from Amazon for another All or Nothing football documentary following their Manchester City series.

Amazon Prime were keen to go behind the scenes at Anfield that season, especially as Liverpool were showing they are the most likely team to mount a sustained challenge to City for the Premier League title.

It was said that many of the Liverpool top brass were prepared to let the cameras in. But Klopp had the final say and was fully against the intrusion. 

Klopp had believed there was nothing to be gained from fly-on-the-wall exposure and that people’s behaviour changes when they are on camera. 

But Klopp today said: ‘With this being my final season I thought we should provide a rare opportunity for viewers to have more of an inside look at what makes this club so special – its people.

‘From our fans to our players and those who work so hard behind the scenes, constantly in pursuit of success for Liverpool Football Club. Thanks to this new documentary series viewers will be able to see what I see every day at this great club, and understand those amazing people more.’

The German’s shock departure was announced by the manager to the world on Friday, but the 56-year-old shared that he had told the Liverpool hierarchy months earlier in November after revealing he didn’t have the energy to continue.

As well as his explanation of his decision to leave filmed by the club, the documentary will likely show the emotional support Klopp received from fans at Anfield during the club’s first fixture since news broke.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Norwich was soundtracked by chants of Klopp’s name and the singing of songs about the heavily decorated manager, and fans waved banners and held up signs in praise of their departing head coach. 

Klopp has been keen to capitalise on the support he has received since the announcement, writing in his programme notes ahead of Liverpool’s tie with Chelsea on Wednesday evening that he wanted fans to provide a ‘proper Anfield atmosphere’ in the face of west London opposition. 

It comes after Rafa Benitez cryptically suggested he has inside knowledge of what prompted Klopp’s surprise departure.

‘I have an advantage, which is that I have people in Liverpool and also people at the club,’ he said.

‘So more or less, I know how it has happened. I know something else from inside, and it has more merit than being there.

‘He (Klopp) goes and speaks up, giving the club time to re-organise, which, from another perspective, is also very German, because they do notify in advance. 

‘So it is not a shock.’ 

Premier League rivals Arsenal were the subject of a season of Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ series 

Earlier this week, Mark Lawrenson had suggested Klopp’s next move will be moving abroad with his wife, Ulla.

Former Red and ex-pundit Lawrenson revealed the German ‘is having a house built in Mallorca’.

‘I have a house somewhere not far away from where he’s building his, and I saw him the other month, and I just said to him after the game ‘how’s the house going on?’ Lawrenson told Off the Ball.

‘And Ulla, his wife, is in charge of everything in terms of that, and he just said “the bloody thing’s not even ready yet, and I’m paying all the bills!” So he’s probably going to retreat to there for a while, I would suggest.’
