Coupe de France: Monaco suffers upset loss to Rouen

Monaco opened the scoring on a penalty kick goal from Folarin Balogun in the 35th minute to take control of the match. Rouen continued battling against Adi Hütter and his squad despite conceding the first goal as the third-division side had seven shots in the first half, and eventually, their efforts paid off.

In first half stoppage time, Clement Bassin scored to level the game 1-1, giving Rouen positive momentum heading into the dressing room. Monaco did respond with seven total shots in the second half but couldn’t find the goal to break the deadlock.

Following a goalless second half, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. A pivotal juncture arose when Balogun had an opportunity to clinch victory for Monaco but faltered, resulting in the shootout’s continuation.

After blocking Balogun’s attempt and preventing Monaco from clinching victory on penalties, Rouen goalkeeper Leonard Aggoune rose to the occasion again, delivering a pivotal save against Maghnes Akliouche to seal the win for Rouen.

Monaco’s hopes of lifting the Coupe de France this year are now over while Rouen continue their magical run to the quarterfinals, where they will face Valenciennes FC. Hütter must now regroup his team for a crucial matchup on Sunday against OGC Nice at the Allianz Riviera.
