Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera has revealed that fellow new signing Viktor Gyokeres is ‘a beast, an animal’ in training.

The Spain international joined the Gunners in a bargain €15 million deal from Valencia in the summer. Mosquera has impressed when given the chance, although he is unlikely to dislodge the elite partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

The 21-year-old is currently on international duty with Spain’s U21s ahead of clashes against Norway and Finland, and he has spoken to AS about his start to life at Arsenal.

“I feel great at the club and in the city,” Mosquera said. “From the first moment [Mikel] Arteta spoke to me, I had no doubts about joining Arsenal. There’s an incredible group of players. Plus, there are a lot of Spanish speakers, which has helped me adapt.”

However, it is one of the non-Spanish speakers who has left one of the biggest impressions on the young defender. Mosquera has revealed that going up against fellow summer signing Viktor Gyokeres in training has been an invaluable experience.

Mosquera: ‘Gyokeres is a beast’

“He’s a beast, an animal,” Mosquera gushed. “Training with him helps defenders improve. There were great players at Valencia, but training with such top-level players is a huge leap.”

“The Premier League is very different, but I’m loving it,” the 21-year-old added when quizzed about his adaptation to England’s top flight. “I’m coping well with that direct style of play.

“Arteta always asks me after games how tired I am, but I’m feeling really good. I grew up with LaLiga’s style, but people always told me that the way I play suited me to the Premier League, and I think they were right.”

Mosquera also insists that he has no illusions about his current place in the pecking order behind Saliba and Gabriel. “When I signed, I knew I was going to encounter them, two world-class stars, but the club’s idea was to have players competing for every position to go as far as possible.”

Going as far as possible means winning the biggest competitions, and Mosquera is convinced that Arsenal can win the Champions League. “Yes, we’re planning to go all out,” he stated confidently. “We have a very good team, and we’re capable.”
