Cristian Romero sees red AGAIN after Tottenham captain’s reckless challenge on Casemiro – days after criticising club’s leadership

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card for the second time this season following reckless challenge on Casemiro.

Romero caught the Man United central midfielder on the ankle with a challenge in the 29th minute at Old Trafford, with the scores goalless.

The challenge left Casemiro requiring treatment, with referee Michael Oliver quickly brandishing a red card to Romero.

Romero had previously been shown a straight red card against Liverpool earlier in the campaign after kicking out Ibrahima Konate.

He was later given an additional one match ban for his behaviour after the red card.

Romero is now set to receive a four-match ban following his second straight card card of the campaign.

The Tottenham captain would have been suspended for nine matches this campaign as a result, having also been suspended for yellow card accumulation.

Romero’s impending sanction would rule him out of matches against Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

His dismissal and subsequent suspension comes days after Romero appeared to criticise Tottenham’s hierarchy amid the club’s injury crisis.

Romero had labelled it ‘disgraceful’ that Tottenham had only 11 fit senior players for their match against Manchester City last weekend, a perceived dig at the club’s lack of activity in the transfer window.

Thomas Frank said the matter had been dealt with internally. Last month, Romero was not punished for a cryptic post later amended about those people at the club who, ‘show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies’.

Prior to his red card, Tottenham fans had been heard chanting at Old Trafford ‘Romero was right, the board are s****’.

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand criticised the Tottenham defender after his latest dismissal, stating ‘Romero is a liability’ on social media.

Michael Dawson, a former Tottenham defender, told Sky Sports that Romero had let his team down again and labelled the situation a ‘disaster’ for Frank.

‘It is an absolute nightmare for Thomas Frank, this is a disaster for Thomas Frank,’ Dawson said.

‘As a manager, you are sitting in 14th and you are going, my captain has come out and said this.

‘Now he leaves your team down to 10-men, I am baffled at this situation, he’s your captain, you are supposed to lead by example and you leave your team vulnerable, 10-men at Old Trafford against a team in form.

‘You are losing your captain and one of your best players, he has let his team down again.’

Man United took advantage of Tottenham being reduced to 10-men, with Bryan Mbeumo opening the scoring in the 38th minute following a corner.
