Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he is planning to retire within the next two years.

The Portuguese legend has still very much got it, notching a brace – including a spectacular bicycle kick – against Poland on Friday in a 5-1 rout by his Roberto Martinez’s side.

Ronaldo, who has been in brilliant form for Al-Nassr this season, will turn 40 in February, so the spectre of retirement is beginning to loom large. Still, his Saudi club are in talks over a contract extension, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.

Signing fresh terms until 2026 would not only permit the Saudi Pro League to negotiate a better, more lucrative broadcasting deal but it would also allow Ronaldo to keep playing regularly until the World Cup in North America.

And this tournament, Ronaldo has now revealed, will be his last – if he even makes it that far.

Ronaldo reveals retirement plans

With his brace against Poland, Ronaldo took his career goal tally to a stunning 910. After the match, he was asked by reporters whether he would make it to 1000.

“I don’t care about 1000 goals at all, wanting it is normal, but I don’t think about it”, Ronaldo responded. “I am planning my retirement and it will happen in a year or two. I have to enjoy the moment and football.

“I have to go to training and to the game motivated, when I don’t feel that way I will take a step forward and say that it is no longer for me. I am going to be 40, I have to take it easy and enjoy it. And what I like most is playing for the national team.”

Barring any serious injury or a shock change of plans, Ronaldo is expected to hang up his boots after participating in the 2026 World Cup.
