Cristiano Ronaldo reveals the one goal he wants to achieve before he retires as he takes a joking dig at Brazilian legend Romario

Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared to aim a joking dig at former Barcelona and Brazil legend Romario during his interview on Wednesday.

Speaking with Rio Ferdinand in a new video on his YouTube channel, the Portuguese superstar highlighted his desire to reach 1000 goals, a feat only a few players achieved.

However, in terms of official games, many sources, such as the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation state that none of the existing footballers achieved such a high number, with the Brazilian legends Romario and Pele having 772 and 767 goals respectively.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo netted the 899th goal of his career in Al-Nassr‘s win over Al Feiha on Tuesday with a stunning shot, marking his 64th goal from free kicks.

Reflecting on his purpose to reach 1000 goals, the 39-year-old player said: I feel good, I think I’m still good looking [laughs]. I feel like I can still dribble, shoot, score goals, jump…’

The Portuguese striker revealed his ambition to score 1000 career goals, with only 101 remaining as he netted his 899th on Tuesday 

However, the 39-year-old superstar highlights a significant ‘difference’ he will have compared to previous footballers who achieved such a feat 

‘The day I feel like I’m not producing anything, not giving anything, I’ll pack my things and walk away [from football]. But right now, I still feel like I’m far from that day.’

‘First, I want to reach 900. Then I want to reach 1000, but with one difference: there will be videos of all the 1000 goals I score so I can prove that I scored,’ added Ronaldo with a cheeky claim about the lack of video proof of Pele’s and Romario’s goals.

It comes after some supporters brutally mocked the Portuguese after it was revealed that he told himself ‘I’m the best’ before smashing a free-kick well over the bar in a game against Al-Taawoun.

Ronaldo then speaks out about the criticism he received for not scoring any goals at the 2024 European Championship.

The striker added: ‘I scored 60 goals last season. But people say: ‘Ah, but you didn’t even manage to score five goals in the European Championship’.

‘So what? What’s the problem? I’ve already scored 130. I’m the greatest goalscorer in the history of football.’

‘But I’m going to raise the bar even higher. Soon, I’ll have 900 goals. And after that, I’ll reach 1,000 goals. I want to reach that mark.

‘How old will I be then? Maybe 41, I don’t know,’ claimed the Portuguese amid the discussions on his retirement after he previously revealed his retirement plans.

In a previous interview with NOW, the 39-year-old dropped a hint that he is not considering hanging up his boots in the next two or three years.

‘But let’s interpret it as I missed the penalty. When I cried, it wasn’t because I thought that if I missed it and Portugal were eliminated, the world would fall on me. It wasn’t because of that.

‘I felt sad for everyone who went to the stadium, especially my family, mother, children, and girlfriend.’
