The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend seemed to have secured his future with Al-Nassr as far back as January, but it is only now that he is close to formally taking steps to legally remain with his current employers.

Marca reports that talks began months ago but were complicated because this extension “strayed from conventional sporting conversations” and that “everything moved slowly”.

In the meantime, there have been numerous rumours over Ronaldo’s future. He had been linked with a move to Europe but there was also the mouthwatering possibility of a hookup with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami for the Club World Cup that was swiftly dismissed.

Despite turning 40 in February, Ronaldo is set to sign a two-year deal that is worth €200m annually, making him the best-paid footballer on the planet.

Ronaldo remains a commercial monster

While the veteran attacker is set to earn a bumper wage, moving to Saudi Arabia has certainly not hit his commercial deals. Indeed, his sponsorship and business interests are said to have “multiplied at all levels”. There are rumours that he could buy a portion of LaLiga side Valencia, for example.

On top of this, Ronaldo is set to own a small stake in Al-Nassr, where he is fully committed for the couple of years ahead. Indeed, he has been relentlessly working to help the club grow its structure, as evidenced by the surprise winter arrival of Jhon Duran from Aston Villa.

One of the key promises that Al-Nassr have made to Ronaldo is that they will build a great team around him, with the signing of the Colombia international one example of this.

The ex-Man Utd star is thought to be targeting the unique achievement of 1000 career goals. Given that he has 23 strikes in the Pro League alone this season and already has 933 goals to his credit, he is within touching distance.

With two more years at Al-Nassr thanks to this new contract, there is every chance Ronaldo could realise his last footballing achievement.
