Henderson departed United in the summer to join the Eagles on a permanent transfer having been deemed as surplus to requirements by Erik ten Hag.

The England international has been patiently waiting for his first Palace outing having started behind Sam Johnstone at the start of the season.

But Roy Hodgson decided to name in his team for his return to the Theatre of Dreams, however it wasn’t the comeback Henderson would have envisaged.

Henderson appeared to have suffered a groin knock immediately after making a clearance, where he hit the deck and required treatment.

He had to be replaced by Johnstone – another ex-United shot-stopper.

Speaking on talkSPORT commentary as he made his way off the pitch, Andy Townsend said: “That’s a blow for Roy Hodgson and his team.

“Never easy to lose your goalkeeper… but so far it’s been a quiet night.”

It proved to be the curse of the commentator, with United instantly making the visitors pay.

Just three minutes after coming on, Johnstone was picking the ball out of his net after Alejandro Garnacho fired home from close range.

Things went from bad to worse for Palace when Casemiro doubled the hosts’ lead when he headed home Mason Mount’s corner shortly before the half-hour mark.

United wrapped up the win in the 55th minute after Casemiro turned provider for Anthony Martial, who slotted home from close range for his first of the season.

Ten Hag’s side were in full control against Palace as the eased their way into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
