Danny Rohl says it’s ‘crunch time’ in the transfer market as Rangers boss looks to move players out as well as bring in a new face for title fight

Danny Rohl says it’s ‘crunch time’ in the transfer market as Rangers boss looks to move players out as well as bring in a new face for title fight

Rangers boss Danny Rohl is gearing up for ‘crunch time’ in the transfer market – and believes the club could land one more marquee signing before the window shuts.

The Ibrox club have already made a statement of intent with the loan signing of Wolfsburg and Denmark winger Andreas Skov Olsen.

They also recruited midfielder Tochi Chukwuani and left-back Tuur Rommens for a combined outlay of around £7million.

Rangers are understood to be in the market for at least two new players before the window closes in just under a fortnight.

And Rohl has hinted that one of those deals could be of a similar ilk to that which brought Skov Olsen to Ibrox.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Ludogorets, Rohl said: ‘I’m knocking on the door of the recruitment team every day to ask if there’s something new.

‘We’ve done a good job so far. We come to the crunch time in the transfer window and it’s really about timing.

‘Sometimes you have to be patient. It’s good to have these three players here, now it’s about timing. In the next seven to ten days, we have to be ready.

‘We have a clear idea, now we have to wait, maybe there’s a domino effect at the other club and then we can take this opportunity for us.

‘Maybe there’s someone who can bring an exciting signing in, but it’s a lot of ifs and maybes, let’s wait.’

Pressed on whether the club are still looking to sign a new striker, Rohl continued: ‘As a manager, you’re always happy with your players.

‘This is my job, to give them the belief, give them the support. To sign a striker means it should be the right one, also the right fit.

‘I think we have different profiles, maybe we can find a player who can play in two or three positions and in all those three positions he is dangerous.

‘This is helpful and this is what I said after the cup game, we need players around the strikers to score more.

‘I think Thelo Aasgaard has started to do that, hopefully Djeidi Gassama and Mikey Moore can continue and score more goals for us.

‘This is a part of the reason we moved for Skov. I expect we can score more with him because it’s a different profile. He will give us assists because of his calmness on the ball.’

Lyall Cameron left Rangers to join Aberdeen on loan last week and Findlay Curtis is in the process of finalising his loan move to Kilmarnock.

Rangers are still looking to offload Danilo, Kieran Dowell, Joe Rothwell, Rabbi Matondo, Clinton Nsiala and Nedim Bajrami if possible.

Asked about possible departures before the window closes, Rohl said: ‘It’s a good thing that we have some players in, but for some players they need game time.

‘I think that was part [of the decision] with Lyall. He made in the last couple of weeks a really fantastic job, it was not easy for him, but he took this very professionally.

‘That’s was what I liked, and I think it’s important now that he gets the minutes. I think he made a straight impact in the last game.

‘Now we will see in the next seven to 10 days, I think there will be some movements in and out. But now we come a little bit to the crunch time in the transfer window, and, again, then it’s really about timing.’

Meanwhile, Stranraer have lodged an appeal with the SFA after being hit with a notice of complaint and possible expulsion from the Scottish Cup for fielding an ineligible player.

Stranraer beat Queen’s Park in a penalty shootout on Tuesday night to tee-up a trip to Ibrox in the next round.

Andreas Skov Olsen may not be the last player to arrive at Rangers during this window

But it later emerged that Lyndon Tas, the on-loan Hearts teenage goalie who became an instant hero on his debut as he made the vital save in the shootout, had not been registered in time.

The match was supposed to have been played last weekend, only to be postponed. With Tas only signed hours before kick-off on Tuesday, it was only players registered for the initial date of the fixture who were eligible.

If Stranraer are kicked out of the competition, Queen’s Park would be reinstated. That would tee up the prospect of another clash with Rangers, after their famous win at Ibrox last season.

The case will go to a hearing next week, but Stranraer have already lodged an appeal, and insists Tas was an emergency loan signing due to Josh Lane being unavailable.

A club statement last night confirmed: ‘We can confirm that an appeal has been made to the Scottish FA regarding the eligibility of goalkeeper Lyndon Tas.

‘Agreement had been reached with Hamilton Academical for Josh Lane to feature in the Scottish Cup 4th Round on Saturday, but this was refused for the rearranged fixture on Tuesday night.

‘With only one goalkeeper in our playing squad, we acted quickly in good faith to recruit a goalkeeper on loan with help from Heart of Midlothian.

‘Scottish Cup competition rules state that where fixtures are rearranged, any new player must be registered by the date of the original tie, unless signed on an emergency loan.

‘The question was raised as to whether the signing of Lyndon qualifies as an emergency loan, and we are deemed to have breached that regulation.

‘We will have the opportunity to present our case and provide mitigation to the panel in due course.’
