David Moyes’ intensity and discipline has left Everton’s relegation fears in the rear-view mirror, writes JOE BERNSTEIN

Intensity and discipline have always been David Moyes hallmarks and now he can add inspiration to his managerial attributes.

Moyes hasn’t changed personnel or come up with revolutionary ideas since replacing Sean Dyche but has injected confidence and positivity into the Everton bloodstream.

Take Beto. Derided throughout his stay at Goodison, the £26million striker stepped in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Saturday and took his two goals like peak Harry Kane.

Everton won their third game in a row and relegation fears are now in the rear-view mirror.

‘The gaffer always tells us we have quality and to show it. The boost of confidence he’s given us is really important,’ said Beto. 

‘Our mentality now is that we want to win games. I showed I’m capable of playing in the Premier League.’

At 61 years old, Moyes is a fully rounded manager now. The street-fighter element will never disappear, though. It was Moyes who coined the ‘People’s Club’ tag when he joined in 2002 and he still likes a target to unite Evertonians. 

‘There is a huge rival in the city (Liverpool) who are very good,’ he said. ‘But we’re going to stand up for ourselves and try to be competitive, even though we don’t have all the things they’ve got.’

Everton are now nine points above the bottom three after their 4-0 over Leicester on Saturday.

A bit-part player like Beto has been accommodated so when he had to step in to replace the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, he made an impact with a first-half brace adding to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal after only 10 seconds – the quickest recorded in Everton’s history. Iliman Ndiaye added a late fourth. 

Ending his three-month goal drought, Beto gestured towards the crowd at Goodison Park after netting twice in the Toffees’ impressive win.

He afterwards explained he was sharing his joy with stricken team-mate Orel Mangala who suffered a season-ending ACL injury the previous week at Brighton.

‘I was picking out Mangala,’ confirmed Beto. ‘He had told me earlier in the day at our training ground at Finch Farm that he would be in the stands.

‘He said if I scored, to point to him, so that is what I tried to do.’
