Crystal Palace have agreed a deal with Milan to sell striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Frenchman undergoing a medical ahead of a move worth ‘in excess’ of €30 million.
Mateta has been Palace’s top scorer for the last two years, as well as having ten goals in all competitions this season, but the 28-year-old has been seeking to leave the club for a new challenge.
While the likes of Manchester United were heavily linked with a move, Nottingham Forest have pushed the hardest to sign Mateta and they had made an offer of £35m (€40m) for him.
Palace had been holding out for £40m (€46m) but David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed that Mateta is now travelling to Milan to complete his move to Italy for a significantly lower fee.
Mateta had been left out of Palace’s match against Forest on Sunday, with manager Oliver Glasner saying the forward ‘was not in the right place’ to play, although he insisted that the decision had ‘nothing to do with a transfer’.
But, with Mateta having 18 months remaining on his contract and rejecting the chance of an extension, Palace are set to cash in on their second star player this month after Marc Guehi’s move to Manchester City earlier in the window.
Palace sanction Mateta departure after agreeing replacement signing
The news about Mateta comes after Palace saw an offer accepted by Wolves to sign striker Jorgen Strand Larsen as a replacement for their outgoing number nine.
Palace had initially been in talks over a deal worth close to €60m but they only returned to the table after making a lower offer of £48m (€55m) including add-ons, which Wolves have now agreed to.
Strand Larsen netted 14 goals for Wolves last season, which saw Newcastle make an offer of more than €65m in the summer, but having only scored once this year, Wolves accepted a lower offer from Palace as they look to sign Adam Armstrong from Southampton as a replacement.
Both Strand Larsen and Mateta should see their deals complete before Monday’s transfer deadline, with talks at an advanced stage and medicals scheduled for the pair.
