Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has been diagnosed with a cruciate ligament injury after being taken off in the 12th minute of Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States on Sunday.

Davies’ agent, Nick Huoseh, has now hit out at the Canadian national team, pointing out that Davies was already carrying a knock before the game and therefore shouldn’t have played.

“He shouldn’t have played in the USA friendly 3rd place match. I was surprised that he started because he had communicated he wasn’t good to start. A source within CSA told me Friday night Alphonso wouldn’t start but might get a few minutes. I told them he shouldn’t play at all,” Huoseh said, according to TZ.

Huoseh went on to direct specific criticism at Canada coach Jesse Marsch, saying:

“In my opinion he should have managed the situation better, this could have been 100% preventable. Prior to Canada, Jesse has coached professional at the highest level and should know very well not to take risks with players when they tell you they can’t play,” he said.

“The national team shouldn’t make emotional decisions based on individual success. I know it was a match against the USA and there was a lot of motivation to win but players health should come first,” said Huoseh, adding that “national teams need to do a better job protecting the players.”

Initial reports have suggested that Davies could be out for around seven months.

“I know he’s in good hands with Bayern’s medical team and will recover from the setback,” said the agent.
