Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Red Bull is becoming an increasingly “realistic” possibility, but that does not mean that he is guaranteed to become the next Real Madrid manager.
The former Liverpool boss has been Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer for just over a year now. In his role, Klopp has primarily acted as an advisor to the energy drink company’s various clubs, helping them make managerial and transfer decisions.
Despite his insistence that he is not planning to return to the coaching dugout anytime soon, speculation has been rampant that Klopp won’t stay with Red Bull for long.
Real Madrid are most frequently associated with the 58-year-old. Alvaro Arbeloa, though he is not technically an interim, is expected to be removed as head coach this summer and replaced with a bigger name.
High-ranking figures at Real Madrid are in favour of trying to appoint Klopp, but BILD reports that these endeavours are unlikely to meet with success. The tabloid claims that those close to the German continue to insist that a return to club management is out of the question for now.
Klopp favours Germany over Real Madrid
Klopp simply does not want to deal with the daily hassle of managing big egos and incessant media pressure. If he is to return to management in the near future, he will only take charge of a national team.
Naturally, the obvious choice would be the German national team. After all, Klopp’s Red Bull contract is said to include a release clause that can only be triggered by the DFB.
And indeed, the report claims that a potential departure of Klopp is a hotly debated topic among senior figures at Red Bull. He is also facing a bit of internal pushback for not regularly attending games and training sessions.
There has been no personal discussion between Klopp and CEO Oliver Mintzlaff regarding an exit – on the contrary, it was previously suggested that he could even be handed a new contract – but Red Bull chiefs believe that it is becoming an increasingly “realistic” scenario.
It is asserted that Klopp could be on the move as early as this summer. Though Julian Nagelsmann has a contract with the national team until 2028, he is a highly sought-after coaching commodity and could be tempted to return to club management after the World Cup.
This would pave the way for the legendary manager to get the job and to make his comeback to the dugout – much sooner than many, including Klopp himself, would have expected.
