Barcelona are, once again, facing struggles to register all their players under the La Liga salary cap, with summer signing Dani Olmo in danger of being left out of their squad in January.
Olmo was Barcelona’s marquee signing in the summer after joining for €55 million from RB Leipzig and the midfielder has already scored three times in four La Liga games this season.
However, Olmo was unable to be registered immediately after he joined, with Barcelona still lacking the revenue on their books to add all their players to their squad.
Olmo was only registered after Andreas Christensen was removed from the squad, having suffered a significant injury which has left him absent for the first half of the season.
But Christensen is in the final stages of his recovery yet Barcelona have not been able to resolve their financial situation to allow both him and Olmo to be registered in January.
Both players were assured, along with fellow summer arrival Pau Victor, that they would be registered in January as Barca had found a solution to their problems but, according to SPORT, the ‘forecasts are at odds with reality’.
Barca aiming for another January ‘lever’
Barca have long-endured financial issues that saw legends such as Lionel Messi leave the club, with La Liga’s strict economic rulings proving preventative to the club’s wage structure.
The Catalans have often operated a series of ‘economic levers’ to resolve their financial issues in the short-term, usually through sponsorship deals or selling off portions of the club’s merchandising sections.
It was believed that a partnership with Nike would have generated €60m for the club, allowing Barca to register Olmo, Christiansen and Victor in January, but that deal has been delayed.
However, the deal with Nike could eventually be closed in January but it would mean weeks of uncertainty for the players, with Olmo only registered until the end of December, at which point Christiansen should be recovered from his injury.
A solution would be for Barcelona to sell a key player in January but, as of yet, no moves are materialising despite interest in stars such as Ferran Torres and Frenkie de Jong.
