DFB investigates Boniface misconduct in Supercup, Terrier also faces suspension

After he gave VfB Stuttgart players the middle finger during the DFL Supercup penalty shoot-out on Saturday evening, the German FA’s disciplinary arm has requested a statement from Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface.

The Nigerian forward faces a league suspension if he does not furnish an adequate response. There is also an, albeit slim, chance that the DFB might suspend Bayer attacker Martin Terrier for the start of the league.

An incident near the end of Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Supercup victory over VfB Stuttgart may lead to B04 striker Victor Boniface being suspended for the start of league play this coming weekend. Germany’s Kicker Magazine has now confirmed that the Nigerian international is under investigation by the German FA’s disciplinary arm for allegedly showing Stuttgart players the middle finger during the penalty shoot out.

The DFB has opened up an investigation into the matter. A DFB statement released Monday notes that the disciplinary arm has “written to the striker and asked for his comment on the matter as soon as possible”. If the 23-year-old does not respond accordingly, he could face suspension in Friday night’s league opener against Gladbach.

For the moment, it does not appear as if such an outcome is likely. Newly-acquired Leverkusen attacker Martin Terrier – who was sent off on a red card in the Supercup – could also theoretically face suspension for the forthcoming league encounter. Kicker nevertheless claims this potential outcome is unlikely. A league suspension for an offense incurred in a one-off cup match is unprecedented.
