Diomandé’s double guides Leipzig to victory over luckless Stuttgart

Third-place RB Leipzig welcomed fourth-place VfB Stuttgart to Saxony this Saturday afternoon for a chance to leapfrog Dortmund in the table. In the end, a Yan Diomandé inspired home side ran out 3-1 winners against the Swabians. 

The hosts signalled their intent inside the opening 3 minutes as Ridle Baku fired wide from a tight angle while Nübel kept David Raum’s shot at bay. Deniz Undav almost buried his way towards goal at the other end but was found in an offside position. 

After a brief lull in the action’s tempo, Leipzig rediscovered their attacking impetus in a flash. Antonio Nusa’s curling effort forced Nübel into a fine save, while Ouédraogo and Rômulo also found themselves well positioned to shoot albeit both lacked accuracy. 

Luca Jaquez came close to steering a header home from a set-piece, however it was Leipzig who eventually made pressure count. Yan Diomandé skipped past challenges and fizzed in a low cross which was steered into his own net by Jeff Chabot before the break.

The Saxony club continued where they left off before the interval and doubled their advantage within eight minutes of the restart. Once again, Diomandé provided the quality by controlling Christoph Baumgartner’s long ball, weaving inside and placed it in the lower-right corner. 

Stuttgart, despite their control of possession, were rather toothless until the 65th-minute. Suddenly, a direct ball from Jaquez found substitute Tiago Tomas who remained ice-cool and rounded Gulacsi to cut the deficit to a solitary goal. 

Rômulo’s header on 81 minutes was spectacularly scrambled off the line by Nübel, but the Stuttgart goalkeeper would suffer ill fate deep in injury time. His heavy touch was pounced on by the Brazilian who punished the mistake to seal a 3-1 victory.
