Dominik Szoboszlai’s love life after his ex refused to join him in Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai has enjoyed a whirlwind 18 months off the pitch, getting married and becoming a father, following his split from model and former tennis player Fanni Gecsek

Dominik Szoboszlai is thriving both on the pitch and in his personal life as he embraces married life and becoming a dad. The Liverpool midfielder tied the knot with Borka Buzsik earlier this year after a whirlwind romance.

The lovebirds made their relationship official in July last year, just after Szoboszlai’s Hungary went out of Euro 2024 in Germany. By October, the pair were engaged after the footballer proposed at a swanky hotel in Budapest.

They exchanged vows in March, with Szoboszlai announcing their marriage on Instagram using striking black and white photos from their big day. The images were simply captioned ‘2025.03. 25’ alongside a red heart.

Just six weeks ago, the duo revealed the arrival of their first child, a little girl. Sharing a touching photo of the couple cradling their newborn’s tiny hands, Szoboszlai wrote: “Your birth means the world to me. Thank you, my love for bringing her into our life! [red heart emoji].”

Buzsik seems to prefer keeping things low-key with only 13 posts on her Instagram account – most featuring herself and her husband – though she has amassed an impressive 84,000 followers. A post from 2022 shows her donning graduation attire after completing her studies at Budapest’s Corvinus University.

Before Buzsik, Szoboszlai was romantically involved with model, influencer and ex-tennis player Fanni Gecsek. The former couple reportedly met while Szoboszlai was playing for Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg back in 2020.

Gecsek once harboured dreams of becoming a top-class athlete herself. From 2017 to 2019, she competed in ITF tournaments, the stepping stone to the prestigious WTA tour. She eventually turned her back on tennis to pursue modelling and social media, where she showcases her glam way of life.

She boasts nearly 85,000 Instagram followers and splits her time between Budapest and Milan, according to her profile. Like Buzsik, she’s highly educated, holding a Master’s degree in Luxury Fashion and Brand Marketing alongside International Sports Management.

Gecsek initially stayed in Hungary to finish her studies as Szoboszlai joined Liverpool, although it is unclear whether that contributed to the end of their relationship. But she certainly took an interest in her partner’s football career, even firing a shot at Romeo Lavia after he opted to sign for Chelsea over Liverpool.

A Reds fan took to Instagram to post a collage of pictures of Lavia sat on the Chelsea bench and Szoboszlai celebrating for Liverpool. The Lavia caption read, ‘Playing for money,’ while the Szoboszlai picture said, ‘Playing for passion.’ The post in question was liked by Gecsek, which was spotted by eagle-eyed fans.

After Wednesday’s thrilling 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Szoboszlai and his Liverpool team-mates are now gearing up for Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.

Since his switch from RB Leipzig in 2023, Szoboszlai has established himself as a key man Liverpool, with manager Arne Slot slapping a £100million valuation on the 24-year-old.

Slot referenced Szoboszlai when defending the Reds’ enormous summer transfer splurge, which saw them splash £450million on eight new faces while recouping £250million through player departures.

Slot said: “There is so much focus on our new signings, especially from pundits that favour some other clubs in the country that cannot stop talking about £450m.

“I repeat, £450m, £450m! But they forget about [nearly] £300m that we have sold for.

“So, yes, if we want to strengthen the squad, we need to spend that much money. If we sell Dominik Szoboszlai tomorrow, he would be worth £100m as well.”
