Italy captain Gigio Donnarumma admits he ‘missed’ San Siro and refused to rule out a return to Serie A with Inter reportedly interested: ‘These situations will unfold…’

The Italy international sees his PSG contract expire in 2026, but talks over a new deal in Paris have been ongoing for a few months.

Several sources in Italy have claimed that Inter are monitoring the Donnarumma situation as the defending Serie A champions are interested in bringing the Azzurri captain back to San Siro.

Contrary to previous outings, Donnarumma was not booed by Milan fans in Italy’s latest San Siro match against Germany, and Gigio was pleased.

“I’m happy because I spent many years here. Finding myself in a stadium like this again is always exciting,” Donnarumma said in the mixed zone via Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Thanks to the people who welcomed me so well. It’s exactly what I wanted to feel. It really touched me, and I’m very happy.”

When a reporter noted that many fans at the stadium would love to see him back permanently at the Stadio Meazza, Donnarumma smiled and said: “I’m really pleased, but above all, I’m happy. These situations will unfold, but for now, I’m just glad to be back because I missed Italy, San Siro, and my teammates. I’m happy to be here, but I’m disappointed with the match. We will certainly try to do better in the return leg.”

Donnarumma already spoke about his contract situation in January, saying that he was eager to extend with PSG.

Italy lost 2-1 to Germany in the first leg of the Nations League quarter-finals last night, and the goalkeeper analysed the Azzurri performance.

“We have to be realistic. Germany have a lot of quality, and we saw that tonight,” he said.

“We could have finished better, and I think the match was decided by an episode where we could have done better, but it wasn’t easy. We’ll go and play our game, trying to improve where we need to. Of course, there’s the defeat, but also the awareness that we are a great team and can achieve great things.

“I have matured a lot. I can feel it. I’m very happy, even though I’m disappointed with the result,” he continued.

“I’m glad to be back with this team after a few months. I missed it so much and I missed wearing the Italy jersey. We will definitely go there with pride and play our game. Italy have shown many times that we can achieve the impossible.”

The Azzurri will visit Germany in Dortmund in the second-leg game on Sunday.
