Dortmund punch quarter-final ticket in cagey fashion by overcoming PSV

After a tense first-leg stalemate, BVB made home advantage count as goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus ensured a 2-0 (3-1 agg.) win.

Edin Terzić’s side made a rip-roaring start to this evening’s victory as they assumed the reigns instantly. Ian Maatsen forced Walter Benitez into a sharp save inside two minutes, but less than 60 seconds later the ball nestled in the Argentine goalkeeper’s net. Jadon Sancho stepping inside his marker to fire home a rasping strike which took a kiss off the left post on its way.

BVB’s total control continued with both Brandt and Malen forcing further Benitez interventions. One would be forgiven for thinking he was the only PSV player on the field at times. That changed quickly approaching the half-hour as Bakayoko tested Kobel with a left-footed drive. Luuk de Jong’s speculative flick before the break wrapped up an entertaining half.

Benitez came to PSV’s rescue instantly after the break as the ever-threatening Malen fired goalwards. Interval substitute Hirving Lozano responded at the other end with a venomous strike that hammered off Kobel’s upright. Dortmund started to hang on slightly approaching the hour. Füllkrug’s header tested Benitez during one rare foray upfield. Meanwhile Kobel’s night got busier as Bakayoko forced another fine save.

Füllkrug looked to have found BVB’s second when he swept home a Marco Reus freekick. However, the tightest of offside calls was spotted by VAR. Hearts were firmly in mouths as De Jong skied a guilt-edged opportunity over the bar. PSV’s luck was firmly out when Teze slipped in possession, Maro Reus pounced, and casually rolled past Benitez to punch their quarter-final ticket.
