Borussia Dortmund will have to do without Emre Can for an extended period, the Westphalian club confirmed this afternoon.

The BVB captain suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee during yesterday’s 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

In a tangle with Konrad Laimer on 38 minutes, Can played through pain until he was replaced by Rami Bensebaini just before half-time.

Given the severity of the injury which typically takes 8-12 months to recover from, the 32-year-old will be sidelined for a considerable spell.

“Emre’s injury is extremely bitter. Not just for him, but for all of us. He is our captain, always puts the team first and is an important part of our club.

“Emre will receive all our support in the coming months so that he can make a full recovery,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
