Borussia Dortmund’s first home outing of 2026 involved a clash against Werder Bremen under the floodlights. After a relatively tame first-half, the hosts eventually took control and pulled away on a 3-0 full-time scoreline.
Despite a desperately cagey start which almost yielded the opener for Justin Njinmah, BVB eventually regained some poise. Gregor Kobel’s save to deny the former Dortmund attacker would prove crucial early on.
As Carney Chukwuemeka began to hit his stride, the hosts constructed a breakthrough. A corner from Julian Ryerson picked out the completely unmarked Nico Schlotterbeck who netted his third goal of the campaign.
At the second time of asking, Njinmah couldn’t get the better of Kobel on 18 minutes who read the scripted chip attempt. The match took on a more stable existence thereafter with limited scoring opportunities.
After a first-half booking, Süle made way for Emre Can at the break. BVB almost extended their lead on 55 minutes when Fabio Silva’s mazy run produced a chance for himself and Beier – both kept out by Bremen’s rearguard.
Bremen’s defensive shape held firm beyond the hour as Sabitzer fizzed another effort over the crossbar. The hosts eventually called on the cavalry with Daniel Svensson Jobe Bellingham and Serhou Guirassy introduced.
The visitors also gave a debut to Stuttgart loanee Jovan Milošević. However, BVB nabbed a two-goal cushion with 15 minutes remaining. Nmecha snapped a pass into Sabitzer who smashed home from the edge of the box in style.
Further gloss was added to the scoreboard when Bellingham’s press forced Pieper into an error as Guirassy converted for 3-0. Bremen shot-stopper Backhaus did well late on to keep the score respectable with some fine saves.
