Dreesen gives thoughts on Bayern UCL draw

Bayern München CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen gave his thoughts on the clubs Champions League Round of 16 draw, with Bayern set to face reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

“It’s a match between the two best teams in Germany at the moment,” said Dreesen, who was appointed CEO in May of 2023. “We would certainly have liked an international match, I have, max Eberl and others of us have said that. But now we are of course looking forward to it and want to show who is first in Germany.”

Since Xabi Alonso took over at Leverkusen in 2022, die Werkself are unbeaten against Bayern, with the club picking up a domestic double last season after ripping the Bundesliga title away from the Rekordmeister. 

Vincent Kompany’s men have drawn with Leverkusen twice this campaign, 1-1 and 0-0 in the Bundesliga respectively, however, the league leaders were dumped out of the DFB-Pokal by the holders in December.

Still with a point to prove in this fixture, Dreesen was keen to outline that a two-legged European tie will be a different test. 

“I’m sure we will see a completely different team against Leverkusen when we play at home on March 5th, not necessarily in the line-up, but in the attitude, also in the attack.”

The Bundesliga’s heavy hitters will go head-to-head at Bayern’s Allianz Arena on Wednesday, March 5th and at the BayArena six days later on March 11th.
