Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has held talks over a sensational return to Inter, according to a report.
The Cameroon international is spending the season on loan at Trabzonspor after falling out of favour under former Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim. Senne Lammens was signed in the summer to become the new No.1 at Old Trafford, forcing Onana to complete a last-minute move to Turkey.
The 29-year-old has earned plaudits for some of his performances this season, having conceded 21 goals in 15 league games so far. Trabzonspor currently sit third in the Super Lig, two points off Fenerbahce in second and five behind leaders Galatasaray.
The Turkish outfit do not have a purchase option for Onana, so he will return to Man Utd in the summer. However, it is widely believed that his time at Old Trafford is over. He is unlikely to be reintegrated into the squad.
As a result, Onana will be on the move again in the next window. He will, unfortunately, go down as a €50 million flop. Nevertheless, he still has admirers around Europe.
Inter in talks to re-sign Onana
Intriguingly, Inter are said to be among the clubs interested in the shot-stopper. It was due to his impressive performances at the San Siro that Onana earned his big-money move to Man Utd.
According to CaughtOffside, the Nerazzurri have already held talks with the goalkeeper over a potential return in the summer. Inter are in the market for a goalkeeper as they are expected to part ways with Yann Sommer.
The Swiss was an excellent replacement for Onana, but the 37-year-old is now past his prime. He has made some uncharacteristic mistakes this season and is out of contract in the summer. He could also make a return to a former club as FC Basel are interested.
As for Onana, he is understood to be keen on heading back to Serie A. In addition to Inter, Juventus have expressed an interest, while Onana’s representatives believe that there could also be goalkeeper movement at Napoli and AS Roma.
Trabzonspor would be open to keeping Onana permanently, but this seems highly unlikely at this stage. Onana is fully expected to move to a top-five league in the summer, and Italy looks to be his most realistic destination at present.
