Former Arsenal sporting director Edu has spoken out following his shock decision to leave the club.
Mail Sport exclusively revealed that the 46-year-old was departing Arsenal on Monday following discussions with the club’s hierarchy.
It later emerged that the Brazilian is poised to join up with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis after agreeing to deal to work with his network of clubs.
The news will no doubt come as a significant blow for the Gunners given the impact he has had since his return to the club in 2019, initially as technical director.
Speaking for the first time since his departure was confirmed, Edu insisted the time was right for him to resign and pursue a new challenge.

‘This was an incredibly hard decision to make,’ he told the club’s website.
‘Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history.
‘It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they’ve given me.
‘I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.
‘Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.’
Gunners co-chairman Josh Kroenke added: ‘We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward.
‘Everyone at the club wishes him well. We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone.
‘Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.’
Edu spent five years as a player at Arsenal between 2001 and 2005 and made 127 appearances for the club
Arsenal currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool.
The Gunners are currently in the midst of a disappointing run in the league, with Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Newcastle seeing them winless in their last three games.
