Eintracht Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller felt his team were robbed of a late penalty in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Going up for a header in front of an open goal, Hugo Ekitike went down in the box after a push from Jonathan Tah.

Toppmöller felt there was enough of a push to warrant a penalty, but much to his frustration, referee Felix Brych disagreed and allowed play to continue.

“I really like Felix as a referee. But his performance today – I’m a little speechless, I have to say. Unfortunately, not everyone on the pitch was in top form today. The game deserved that,” Toppmöller fumed after the match.

He pointed out that Ekitike was “in the air” and then Tah made contact from behind.

“He lost his balance. Otherwise he would have put the ball into an open net from three meters. If [the referee] doesn’t see it and checks it, then we don’t need the video evidence. That really annoyed us, the boys are very angry.”

Leverkusen managing director for sport Simon Rolfes saw things differently.

“You can still touch people, we don’t play contactless,” he said.
