End of the season for Buongiorno as Napoli confirm injury

Napoli confirm their centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno has suffered a thigh injury, and Italian sources claim the defender’s season is over.

Napoli and Italy defender Buongiorno is expected to remain out of action for the remainder of the season after collecting an injury against his former club Torino on Sunday.

The defender underwent medical tests today, after which Napoli revealed the 25-year-old had suffered a strain injury to the adductor longus muscle of the right thigh. Napoli added that Buongiorno has already commenced the rehabilitation protocol.

According to Sky Sport Italia reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, this means Buongiorno’s season is over.

Buongiorno was surprisingly started against Torino after making a quick recovery from a previous injury, but was forced to be subbed off in the second half.

The Partenopei returned to the top of the Serie A table on Monday, after a 2-0 victory against the Granata, inspired by a Scott McTominay brace.

Napoli will meet Lecce (away), Genoa (home), Parma (away) and Cagliari (home) in the last four games of the campaign.

Former Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi recently argued that whether the Partenopei win the title or not, their season would still be a “masterpiece.”

“The assessment of a coach must consider the overall contribution and their impact on the environment and the players. And when you get the results as well, it just gets better.”
