England’s first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford earned more adulation among Everton supporters on Wednesday with on-field heroics against Liverpool, but he left many confused by one off-field answer.

Pickford kept a clean sheet as Sean Dyche‘s 16th-placed side boosted their bid against relegation with a 2-0 victory over their bitter rivals in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The goalkeeper featured in the Toffees’ matchday programme answering a few questions in their ‘Matchday Takeover’ section.

However, it was one answer that puzzled eagle-eyed fans.

Asked what is the one rule change he’d make in football, the England shot-stopper answered: ‘Scrap fouls and let’s get on with it.’

With the image shared by the Football Ramble on X, formerly Twitter, it led to some tongue-in-cheek replies.

‘Referee must have read that before the game. Everton came out in Liverpool’s faces, put it up them, fair play to them.. and yet Liverpool 16 fouls to Everton’s 3?,’ replied one user.

‘Fully deserved the win though, so let’s not misread this as me suggesting otherwise.’

Two others users were less playful with their words though.

‘Bit rich of him considering he throws a tantrum every time an opposing player, comes within a country mile of him on corners!’ said one account.

Another posted: ‘Cries like a baby when he gets touched up at corners though the little weasel.’

Since last Monday’s 6-0 mauling at Chelsea, Everton have responded emphatically with home wins over Nottingham Forest and Liverpool (both 2-0).

Speaking after Saturday’s win over Forest, Pickford told evertontv: ‘We will keep fighting, keep battling, do what we do and give it our all.

‘The team’s collective performance is bigger than any individual one, we have to give 100 per cent to make sure we are helping each other to keep fighting and getting results.

‘We keep giving ourselves tough seasons but we keep fighting, keep going and we won’t stop.’

Pickford will hope that continues on Saturday when they host Brentford in the 5.30pm kick-off.
