The Crystal Palace centre-back has decided that he wants a big move to Liverpool, whether that’s in January or July.

Marc Guehi is “willing to wait to get his move” to Liverpool, according to reports in The Sun, as per Daily Mail.

With a contract that expires in June 2026, Guehi is fast approaching the window where Crystal Palace have to either renew him or sell him to ensure a profit.

Guehi was linked with a transfer to Newcastle all through the summer but showed no interest in the move.

This was greatly appreciated by his manager. “All the rumours didn’t influence his performances,” said Oli Glasner. “He always told me that he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and that is always the most important thing for me.”

Guehi joined Palace for €23.3 million in the summer of 2021, leaving his boyhood club Chelsea.

He was the club’s third most expensive signing of all-time (though the recent signing of Eddie Nketiah for €29.7 million has bumped him down to fourth).

It was a huge show of faith in a defender who, at the time, had just turned 21. But who had been very impressive in previous seasons on loan at Swansea.

While at Palace, the 24 year-old has matured top quality centre-back good enough to make his debut for England in 2022 and become a regular by 2024, playing every minute of every game save the quarter-final for which he was suspended. In the last minute of the final he had a header cleared off the line, preventing what would have been a dramatic equaliser.

A Rock for Palace

Even though Crystal Palace have struggled this season, Marc Guehi has managed to show his quality.

With club captain Joel Ward no longer good enough to start, Guehi has been captaining Crystal Palace throughout the season.

Moreover, Guehi has been a constant presence for The Eagles, playing every single minute of every single match (1,980 in total) until he missed the win over Southampton through suspension after picking up five yellow cards in the preceding 18 league games.

He would be a solid signing for Liverpool primarily for that physical stability. Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are both fine centre-backs but they are also prone to injuries and Jarrell Quansah is young and unproven.

Having someone as reliable as Guehi next to Virgil van Dijk would make Liverpool even more defensively robust than they already are, and would stand the club in good stead for the inevitable transition away from their 33 year-old captain.
