‘Entitled’ Liverpool fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield risk ruining Premier League title celebrations, CHRIS SUTTON tells IAN LADYMAN on the latest ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’ podcast

The ‘entitled’ Liverpool fans who decided to boo wantaway full back Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed a line and risk ruining the party atmosphere at the club as it lifts its first Premier League title in front of The Kop, pundit Chris Sutton told co-host Ian Ladyman on the latest ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’ podcast.

The England right back, 26, who grew up in Liverpool and came through the Kirkby academy, announced on Wednesday his intention to leave Liverpool in the summer upon the expiry of his contract.

It is widely expected that Alexander-Arnold will join up with friend Jude Bellingham and move to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

During Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday, Alexander-Arnold was booed by his own supporters as he entered the pitch as a substitute to replace Conor Bradley.

Speaking to Mail Football Editor Ian Ladyman, former professional player turned pundit Chris Sutton said he was surprised by the behaviour of some ‘entitled’ Liverpool fans.

‘I thought the anger was just a social media thing’, Sutton began.

‘But clearly it wasn’t – Trent was booed every time he got on the ball. I just don’t understand it.

‘You’re a local boy who’s won everything, who’s done everything there is to do and has been a great servant – who now wants a different challenge. That’s the way I see it.

‘All of this, you can’t tell people how to think or how they should feel – I understand that, but then there’s right and wrong, there’s crossing a line.

‘It’s so sad because this should be a season of celebration – the fans should be in party mode right now and be really excited for the big trophy day. This is souring the situation.

‘We are going through an era where there a lot of entitled fans out there. It’s taking the enjoyment out of it – I have been in football for a long time, and I’ve never seen anything like it.’

Disgruntled fans argue that Alexander-Arnold deliberately ran down his contract at his boyhood club to simplify a move to Los Blancos and receive a large signing-on fee as a free agent.

Columnist Ladyman agreed with his co-host, arguing that, as a journalist, the behaviour of some Liverpool fans risks stealing media focus away from the club’s positive season.

‘There’s going to be a lot of questions pitched to Arne Slot before the end of the season about the Trent situation’, Ladyman said.

‘Liverpool fans need to remember that this is a moment in time for them: this is the first time a Liverpool team has picked up a Premier League trophy in front of their own fans.

‘They’ve got a choice: do they want to revel in it, soak it up, enjoy every moment and experience something that they can tell their grandkids about in years to come or are they going to ruin it by turning it into the Trent Alexander-Arnold s***show.

‘Booing a local player, with a Premier League winners medal round his neck and a trophy in his hands would be abysmal. Utterly abysmal and would ruin that day.’
