Maresca on why Palmer didn’t face Newcastle

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed the reason behind keeping Cole Palmer on the bench against Newcastle United last night.

The Blues suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Magpies in the Carabao Cup fourth round yesterday. Palmer was an unused substitute in the game.

Speaking after the loss, Maresca said that Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku were doing well and he did not need to change things around.

He said: “The reason why [we brought him] was in case we needed Cole but Joao and Christo were doing well so there was no need to change.”

Palmer has become Chelsea‘s most important player since his arrival from Manchester City and he has already made over 50 goal contributions.

With his huge importance, Maresca wants to handle him with extra caution and it was probably a reason behind him staying on the bench yesterday.

However, the fans will be disappointed, considering the Blues have squandered the chance to win a trophy through the Carabao Cup.
