Manchester United‘s humbling defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday has seen manager Erik ten Hag set an unwanted club record.

A Luis Diaz double and a second-half strike from Mo Salah inspired the visitors to a defiant 3-0 win over United at Old Trafford.

Such victories from opposition sides are usually a rarity at the home of the 20-time English top-flight champions.

However, times have changed since Ten Hag arrived through the door at Old Trafford and it is not the first time United fans have seen embarrassed at home.

The Dutchman has become the first Red Devils boss to lose three Premier League home games by three or more goals in the space of 12 months.

Liverpool’s rampant victory follows Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford in October 2023 and Bournemouth’s shock triumph by the same scoreline in December 2023.

The first of those defeats saw Erling Haaland net a brace before Phil Foden polished off proceedings in what was another dark day for United.

And it wouldn’t be long until Red Devils fans would suffer again as just six weeks later Dominic Solanke, Philip Billing, and Marcos Senesi all found the back of the net for Bournemouth at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

Despite the lack of progress under his stewardship, Ten Hag is not concerned and defended his record during his two years at United.

‘I don’t think we are in the same pattern,’ He told Sky Sports. ‘It was sometimes open and we took risks, but I don’t want to talk about this after a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. Well done Liverpool. We have to be humble and take it.

‘There are many games to play and I know where we will be at the end of the season. We will go for trophies.

‘In the two years, we took two prizes. We brought new players in, there are still some players not available. The opponent is probably a little bit further in certain areas but we will catch up and come back. We have to stand up and bounce back.’

Comparatively, Arne Slot became Liverpool’s first permanent manager since 1975 to win his first competitive match against United.

In addition, the Dutchman is only the second Reds boss to win his first away league game against the Red Devils, with George Kay the only other manager to manage the feat, back in 1936.

Slot has endured the perfect start to life on Merseyside, winning his first three matches in charge without conceding a goal.

However, the Liverpool boss has remained humble and insists that his side still have a lot of work to do.

‘It’s a good win, but when the players come back from their international teams there are so many games that have to be played in a short period of time,’ said Slot to Sky Sports.

‘It’s normal if you win a game like this, you have nine points, you win a game at Old Trafford, the fans are excited.

‘But for us, there is still a lot to prove. For us a lot to prove when we play Champions League and the weekends.’
