Euro Recap: France held, Austria win and more

France 0-0 Netherlands

With former Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé sidelined with a broken nose, France were unable to break down the Dutch in Group D. Former LOSC Lille goalkeeper Mike Maigan, a Ligue 1 winner with Les Dogues in the 2020/21 season, made four saves, and was happy to have seen the flag go up after Paris Saint-Germain winger Xavi Simons (who spent this season on loan at RB Leipzig) had the ball in the net just past the hour mark. France had fewer clear-cut chances, with Antoine Griezmann and former SM Caen midfielder N’Golo Kanté both scuffing opportunities early in the first half. Despite dominating possession and having more shots, Didier Deschamps‘ side will feel lucky to have escaped with a point but remain behind the Dutch on goals scored, meaning they will have to better the Oranje‘s result if they hope to top the group.

Slovakia 1-2 Ukraine

In a Group E matchup, Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Skriniar’s Slovakia were eager to build on a shock win over Belgium on the first matchday, and took the lead through Ivan Schranz, the hero of last Monday’s win on 18 minutes. Despite dominating possession and taking that lead into halftime, Ukraine would battle back and finish the match with a 2-1 win. Slovakia can progress with a win against Romania next week, and will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of Belgium’s tussle with I Tricolorii tomorrow.

Poland 1-3 Austria

In today’s other Group D match, RC LensKevin Danso, Przemysław Frankowski and Adam Buksa squared off, with the former’s Austria battling back from a narrow defeat to France with a comprehensive win over the Poles. Danso came off the bench on the hour, helping his side seal the victory, while Buksa, who spent last season on loan with Turkish side Antalyaspor, played the match’s first hour before being substituted and Frankowski played the entire match. Former Stade de Reims goalkeeper Patrick Pentz was in net for the Austrians, while ex-Stade Rennais winger Kamil Grosicki played the match’s final half hour for Poland.
