Luka Modric wants to extend his Real Madrid contract by a further season, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The veteran midfielder is still going strong at 39 years of age. The last remaining remnant of Real Madrid’s eminently successful midfield triumvirate, Modric has outlived both of his former partners Casemiro and Toni Kroos at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Croatian remains an eminently important player under Carlo Ancelotti, although his minutes have naturally decreased this season. Modric is often a substitute who enters games later on to provide control.

The classy operator is still second to none in European football when it comes to dictating the tempo of the game. Despite his advanced age, Modric has already made a whopping 44 appearances for Real Madrid this season. He has scored four goals and provided seven assists.

Modric to extend his Real Madrid deal

Modric is evidently still capable of performing at a very high level. Indeed, the former Tottenham man believes that he can still keep going for at least one more season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Modric has decided that he wants to extend his Real Madrid contract until 2026. Unlike Kroos, who retired last summer, the Croatian was fitted with a new one-year deal last year.

Romano states that Modric views Real Madrid as his top priority and that he will stay should the club agree to offer him another extension. In recent seasons, the midfielder has fielded interest from the Middle East and the US.

Real Madrid have shown a willingness to extend the contracts of their distinguished club legends for as long as the players feel capable of continuing, so it seems unlikely that the club would decide against handing Modric another new deal.

Formal talks over a new contract appear to have not yet taken place.
