Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United are in talks with Harry Maguire and determined to seal a new contract for the defender.

Maguire’s current deal at United expires at the end of the season and until recently it had seemed as if he was certain to leave on a free transfer next June.

But Maguire’s stock has risen considerably and he is much appreciated by the hierarchy at United, and by Ruben Amorim. The United manager believes he is perfect for his three-man defence.

This was shown on Sunday when he produced an excellent performance at Anfield and scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Maguire in talks over new contract

On his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano confirms that Maguire is in talks with United over a new contract.

The signals seem positive with both player and club keen to get a deal done.

The potential sticking point is his salary as Maguire will have to take a paycut.

Nico Schira has reported elsewhere that Maguire should sign an extension until 2028.

Earlier this year, United chose to activate the option of extending Maguire’s contract by another year.

The centre back joined from Leicester for a world-record fee for a defender of around €87 million in 2019.

After a decent first two seasons at the club, Maguire endured four more challenging past years for Man Utd.

After an error-prone 2021-22 season, he finally lost his place in the first team during the 2022-23 campaign as then-manager Erik ten Hag preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his centre back pairing.

Maguire also started the 2023-24 season down the pecking order but an injury crisis saw him return to the fold.

His form has improved individually since then but United endured bad seasons collectively in 2034-24 and 2024-25.

This season Maguire has made eight appearances for United, scoring two goals.
