Romano says that United had an official contact with Atletico in an attempt to bring Gallagher to Old Trafford on loan with an option to buy.

Crystal Palace also made a late move for Gallagher but Atletico were not interested in selling the midfielder.

Romano’s report confirms FootballTransfers’ earlier exclusive that Ruben Amorim wanted to bring in Gallagher.

What did Romano say?

“In the final 24 hours of the transfer window, Conor Gallagher was a target for Manchester United,” Romano told the Here We Go Podcast.

“Man Utd wanted to buy a midfielder, Man Utd tried for Gallagher.

“They had an official contact with Atletico Madrid. they asked for a loan move with a buy option included and paying the main part of the salary.

“But the answer from Atletico Madrid was no chance of agreeing to a loan deal in the final hours of the window.

“Crystal Palace also tried to bring him back but Atletico Madrid would not let him go.”

The 25-year-old Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in the summer of 2024 and made 50 appearances in his first season.

He has made three appearances so far this campaign for Diego Simeone’s men.

Gallagher has also won 21 caps for England, scoring one goal.
