Fabrizio Romano has revealed that any deal for Jeremie Frimpong this January may be more complicated to arrange than the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea wish.

Frimpong has been targeted by a series of major clubs ahead of the transfer window following his blistering performances for Bayer Leverkusen, playing a significant role as Xabi Alonso’s side have climbed to the top of the Bundesliga table.

With a release clause of €40 million in his contract, the former Celtic star is an attractive proposition, particularly when it is considered that his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is €49m.

Beyond Man Utd and Chelsea, Real Madrid and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Frimpong.

Romano, though, has dealt a blow to the clubs hoping to prise him away from Leverkusen this winter.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he revealed: “Jeremie Frimpong’s release clause is only valid in the summer — he could leave Bayer Leverkusen in July 2024.

“The value of the release clause is €40m with favourable payment terms.”

Leverkusen are therefore in control of the player’s destiny during January.

Will Frimpong move in January?

Frimpong is unlikely to be sold by the Bundesliga leaders during the forthcoming transfer window given the Netherlands star’s importance to the club and their advantageous position in the league.

Leverkusen, after all, are a club that has been synonymous with coming up short when it comes to winning major titles. They have never won the Bundesliga before, finishing as runners-up on five previous occasions, so to be in this position is a big thing for them.

Giving up the 22-year-old willingly in the middle of the season would compromise much of what they have done to date.

Frimpong has four goals and six assists across 12 Bundesliga matches this season, contributing to a goal every 97 minutes he has been on the field for the club on average.

These statistics have made him the most coveted right-back in Europe, yet equally Romano’s information suggests that he will not be on the move until the summer, when someone could land a bargain deal.
