Favre: ‘Sommer among top 3 goalkeepers in the world ‘ this season

Inter shot-stopper Yann Sommer can be the key to winning the Champions League Final against PSG, said his old coach Lucien Favre. ‘He is among the top three goalkeepers in the world.’

The two teams will go head-to-head in Munich on May 31 to decide who lifts the trophy.

The Nerazzurri qualified thanks to a thrilling 7-6 aggregate semi-final victory over Barcelona, culminating in the 4-3 extra time win at San Siro.

Sommer was named UEFA Man of the Match after that encounter and it does not surprise his former Borussia Monchengladbach boss Favre.

“Smart guy,” Favre told La Gazzetta dello Sport about the goalkeeper, who worked with him in 2014-15.

“I wanted him at Gladbach, at the time he was at Basel and starting to make his mark with Switzerland at international level.

“He is absolutely an underrated goalkeeper, especially due to his height, I think. Sommer gives off a sense of confidence, as it was not easy to take over from Marc Andre ter Stegen, but Yann was exceptional, showing courage, character, and great saves.

“When I saw his fingertip save on Lamine Yamal for Inter, I thought back to that incredible campaign.”

Sommer aiming for Champions League glory at Inter

Now Sommer is preparing to participate in the Champions League Final with Inter, where he is up against Italy and PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“I’d say he is among the top three goalkeepers in the world this season,” added Favre.

“Perhaps Donnarumma is still a step above, but if I have to evaluate purely this season’s performances, and especially in the Champions League, then I’ll take Sommer.

“He was absolutely decisive against Barcelona and Bayern Munich. His saves will be needed to win the trophy, he is Inter’s Number 10.”

When it comes to the Champions League Final, who does Favre tip to win between Inter and Paris Saint-Germain?

“PSG are the favourites, as Luis Enrique has managed to improve a team that lost Messi, Neymar and Mbappé. However, watch out for Inter, as I was fortunate enough to face Simone Inzaghi four times when he was at Lazio, and I never managed to win.

“They were with Nice in the Europa League and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. He knows how to deal with a squad and Sommer is the perfect example.”
