FIFA forced to compensate Bayern Munich as club fume over ‘negligence’

FIFA could be forced to pay out to Bayern Munich after Alphonso Davies’ injury bombshell. The defender has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after picking up a serious knee injury while on international duty with Canada.

Davies was injured during Canada’s CONCACAF Nations League win against the United States earlier this month. And it was revealed that he had torn his ACL.

The news left chiefs at the German giants furious, who took aim at Canada and accused the nation of negligence. “We’re demanding a full investigation into the events from Canada Soccer and expressly reserve the right to take legal action,” Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen said earlier this week.

“Sending a clearly injured player with a damaged knee on a 12-hour intercontinental flight without a thorough medical assessment is, in our view, grossly negligent and a clear breach of medical duty of care,” Dreesen added. “The participation of Davies, who already had muscular problems before the game, in a match of no sporting significance is incomprehensible from our point our view.”

And it now appears FIFA will pay Bayern Munich compensation amid their fury. According to Sport1, the game’s organisers run a Club Protection Program to compensate clubs if they lose a player on international duty.

It is calculated based on the wages of each player, with the maximum payout being €7.5 million (£6.2m). Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has also taken aim at the Canadian Federation for failing to spot the injury.

“He is the captain, a young man who wanted to help his team but it was borderline,” he said. “The second issue is the injury after 12 minutes. Then Phonzy [Alphonso] flies back on a 12-hour flight and we all assume it is not a serious injury but then we have this.

“That is sloppy. It is not professional and we need to talk and clear it up. We are the employers, we pay the players, so we will be looking into what happened.”

Davies, 24, had made 31 appearances for Bayern Munich throughout the campaign, scoring on three occasions. His future had previously looked uncertain, with his contract set to expire this summer albeit he signed a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

His Bayern teammate Harry Kane had sent him a message of support after the news of his season-ending injury. He wrote on Instagram : “We’re all behind you @alphonsodavies. No doubt you’ll come back from this injury stronger than ever.”
