Filipe Luis: Bayern are a European colossus

With his side set to face Bayern München in the round of 16 stage of the Club World Cup, Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis has given his thoughts on the clash.

“Bayern are part of the elite, a giant, a European colossus,” said the 39-year-old, who took over at the helm of the Brazilian giants in 2024.

“They’re dominant and have an extraordinary squad, with an excellent coach. They’re a club that inspires us and gives us ideas to copy, but in a game, anything can happen.”

“I haven’t decided anything yet about the lineup and match plan. I’ll study them first before deciding.”

Flamengo topped Group D following their 1-1 draw against LAFC, and they played their part in one of the biggest moments of the tournament so far as they beat Chelsea 3-1 in Philadelphia. 

Bayern secured their passage into the knockout stages with ease, however missed out on top spot following yesterday’s 1-0 loss against Benfica. 

Speaking ahead of the Bayern fixture, Luis was keen to outline how important his side’s identity is: “Flamengo’s DNA requires you try to take the ball away from the opponent, try to press, control the game and be as vertical as possible.”

He wasn’t shy to admit that they won’t divert away from this against Bayern: “That is what we will try to do. We know their quality and the way they play. They will try to impose their rhythm, and we will try to do the same. In the end, may the best team win.”

Experienced defender Alex Sandro, once of Juventus, also gave his thoughts on the clash: “We know how strong Bayern are, the players they have,” said Sandro.

“Our game plan doesn’t change. Obviously, each game has its own story. For me, playing against Bayern has always been great, because I love playing against big teams. It’s a great chance to see the level we are at today. The level will increase 100%, whether it’s on their part or ours.”

Bayern’s encounter with the Brazilian top club will take place on Sunday, June 19th, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
