Despite strong links to Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Liverpool are actually targeting Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, according to a report.

The Reds are enduring a difficult season. Their record-breaking €450+ million summer spending spree has left the team unbalanced and piled the pressure on head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool’s title defence has been over for months, and the best they can seemingly now hope for is qualification for the Champions League. As a result, the Anfield club have been tipped to dip into the market again.

Because of their defensive frailties, signing a new centre-back is the top priority this year, but it has also been suggested that Liverpool could look to bring in a new holding midfielder.

Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton has been heavily linked with the Reds in recent days, with some reports going so far as to suggest that a move to Merseyside is edging closer. However, in actual fact, Liverpool are targeting a different midfield profile.

Liverpool want Rogers, not Wharton

At least that is according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Writing in his GiveMeSport newsletter (via Anfield Watch), Jacobs claims that links with Wharton are tenouus at best and that it is instead Aston Villa attacker Morgan Rogers who has admirers at Liverpool.

“Suggestions that Wharton has already agreed a five-year deal with Liverpool are wide of the mark,” Jacobs revealed. “Liverpool’s priorities lie elsewhere, both in terms of targets and positions.”

“I sense that if a midfielder is to arrive at Anfield this year, it will more likely be one with goals output who can also play in wide areas. Morgan Rogers is the type of profile some within Liverpool appreciate.”

However, signing the 24-year-old will not be straightforward. On the contrary, Rogers recently penned a new long-term contract with Aston Villa, putting the Birmingham club in a strong position to fend off interest.

The only way a reasonable deal may be secured for Rogers is if Villa fall foul of financial regulations again and need to sell. Otherwise, it is expected that they will demand north of €100 million for the attacking midfielder.
