Former Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is still a free agent, six months after leaving Spanish side Levante.

The 31-year-old, who made 151 appearances for the Gunners from 2016 to 2021, was most recently playing for Levante in the second tier of Spanish football.

After the club failed to get promoted to LaLiga via the play-offs, they decided to let the former German international leave at the end of his contract last summer.

Mustafi, who has also played for German side Schalke since leaving the Gunners, has been actively looking for a club without much luck so far.

Speaking to Sport, he said: ‘There have been intensive discussions recently with those responsible at some clubs.

‘But negotiations can also drag on. I’m waiting and ready for a new task. The anticipation is great.

‘It still tingles. I noticed that when I was working as a pundit and standing on the sidelines.’

When asked if his next club would be in Germany or abroad, Mustafi added: ‘It will probably be abroad.

‘I told my father and my advisor that I was open to anything. I speak five languages and my time abroad also made me very adaptable. So I’m pretty flexible.’

The experienced defender has been linked with a number of clubs since his Levante exit, including at Serie A side Roma.

During his time at the Gunners, Mustafi won two FA Cup medals in 2017 and 2020.

However, he developed a reputation for errors during his time at the Emirates and in February 2021, Arsenal and Mustafi reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

His greatest success though came with the German international team, as he was part of the squad that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
